St. Agnes Parish became Springfield’s fourth Roman Catholic parish, established
when it celebrated its first Mass on September 27, 1908. The need for a new
parish emerged from those Catholics residing in the fast-growing area south
of the railroad tracks who felt heavy train traffic presented increasing danger
when traveling to their parishes north of the tracks. This same hazard prompted
the earlier establishment of Saint Agnes Grade School on the corner of Elm and
South in 1906. See initial press release. For more information, contact Centennial Celebration Chairperson Ann Compton, at (417) 838-0677.
